System Organization¶
The DataPortal system has been designed in a hierarchical way, enabling logical grouping of data and resources. The foundation of the organization is made up of system accounts and projects, within which all configuration elements are gathered – devices, tags, and SCADA screens.
System accounts and users¶
Every DataPortal user belongs to a specific system account – usually corresponding to a company, institution, or organization.
-
System account – the top-level organizational unit. It represents the entirety of a given client's resources, including their projects, devices, screens, reports, and users.
-
Users – people who have access to the system account. Each user is assigned a role (e.g. administrator, operator, observer), which defines the scope of functions and permissions available to them in the system.
The account administrator can:
- invite new users,
- assign and change roles,
- delete user accounts,
- manage projects belonging to the account, including their resources,
- create and modify SCADA screens.
Projects¶
A project is the basic organizational unit created within a system account. Each project represents a logically related set of resources – e.g. a group of devices monitoring a given facility, or a group of monitored facilities in more complex installations.
Within a project, telemetry devices, data sources, tags, SCADA screens, and reports are gathered. Projects can be placed in folders, which can be nested as needed, creating a structure corresponding to, for example, locations or organizational departments.
A detailed description of creating and managing projects can be found in the next chapter: Projects and Folders.
