Project Management¶
In the DataPortal system, projects are the basic organizational unit in which all system elements are gathered – such as devices, data sources, tags, SCADA screens, or reports. Thanks to projects, users can logically group and manage resources associated with specific installations, clients, or locations.
Default project¶
When an account is created in the system, a default project is automatically generated, named: account-name start. The project name can later be freely changed.
The default project serves several functions in the system:
- Creating resources and screens – when adding new resources or screens, the default project is pre-selected. If other projects exist in the system, any of them can be selected instead.
- Deleting projects while keeping resources – if a project is deleted while keeping its associated resources, they will be automatically assigned to the default project (unless another one is specified).
Changing the default project
The default project cannot be deleted from the system – there must always be a project serving this role on the account. However, it can be changed: right-click the desired project in the project tree and select the Set as default project command from the context menu.
Apart from the functions described above, the default project is no different from other projects in the system.
Creating a new project¶
To create a new project:
- Go to the Projects section in the main menu.
- Select the New project command available in the add menu (the button) in the top right corner or in the context menu after clicking a selected folder in the project tree.
- Enter the project name – it should clearly identify the installation or client.
- (Optional) Add a project description – e.g. the facility's location or monitoring scope.
- Select the folder in which the new project will be placed.
- Confirm by clicking SAVE.
Available tabs
In the project form, only the INFO tab will be available for editing. The remaining tabs will only become active after the project has been added.
The newly created project will appear in the list of projects available for your account.
Project permissions¶
Access to projects depends on the user's role and the permissions granted to them. The account administrator can:
- create, edit, and delete projects,
- assign users to specific projects,
- set the access level (e.g. view-only or full management).
Users with lower permissions (e.g. observers) may have access only to viewing data and SCADA screens, without the ability to edit the configuration.
Editing and deleting projects¶
To change a project's name or description:
- Open the details of the project you want to edit by selecting it from the project list.
- Click the EDIT button.
- Enter the new details and confirm the changes by clicking SAVE.
To delete a project, click the DELETE button in the project details window, or use the Delete option in the context menu available by clicking the project name in the project tree (in the Projects module).
Deleting related elements
Deleting a project permanently deletes all its resources – screens, sources together with their tags, and reports. This operation is irreversible. Select the elements you want to delete; the remaining elements can be assigned to another project.
Project resources¶
Within a project, you can create and configure various types of resources: telemetry devices, data sources, tags, SCADA screens, and reports. A detailed description of each can be found in the section Manage system → Resources.
Best practices¶
- Use clear project and folder names (e.g. Headquarters – Laboratory instead of Project 1).
- Group resources logically – this makes managing permissions and reports easier.
- In large organizations, it is recommended to create separate projects for each client or facility.
