Cost Calculator

The cost calculator is a feature that lets you estimate the cost of using the DataPortal system, expressed in InPoints. It lets you check how individual project configuration elements (the number of data sources, tags, screens, reports, SMS messages, or access licenses) affect the daily and monthly cost of using the system.

Opening the calculator

The cost calculator is available from the menu in the application's top bar, in the top right corner.

Cost summary

At the top of the calculator window, a summary is displayed:

  • estimated daily cost — in InPoints,
  • estimated monthly cost (calculated for 30 days),
  • a RECALCULATE button, which triggers a recalculation of the cost based on the currently set parameters.

Below the summary is a horizontal stacked chart with a legend, showing the percentage share of individual cost items (including data sources, tags, updates, retention, screens, reports, report executions, SMS messages, CAL licenses) in the total daily cost.

Cost categories

Cost items are grouped into three categories, each with a header and a subtotal displayed on the right ("Total: … inPoint / day"):

  • Data — cost of data sources, cost of tags, cost of tag updates, cost of tag retention,
  • Visualization — cost of screens, cost of reports, cost of report executions,
  • Communication and access — cost of SMS messages, cost of CAL access licenses,
  • Other - adjustment to the minimum fee.

Minimum fee

Every account is subject to a daily minimum fee, proportional to the number of connected data sources.

Every day, the system sums up the costs of the usage components (including sources, data acquisition, storage, visualization, reports). If this sum is lower than the applicable minimum fee, the difference is added as an extra line item — an adjustment to the minimum fee.

Example

If only 1 source is registered on the account and there are no other costs − no tags, data, storage, screens, reports, etc., then:

  • minimum fee: 1 inPoint (typical minimum fee amount for a single source)
  • total cost: 0.3 inPoint (typical cost of a single source)
  • adjustment to the minimum fee: 1 − 0.3 = 0.7 inPoint

Each cost item is presented as a separate card containing the unit cost, the parameter to be set, and the total cost of that item calculated based on it.

Setting parameters

The value of each parameter can be changed in several ways:

  • using the slider,
  • selecting a value from the selection field (where applicable for the parameter, e.g. data retention time),
  • entering a value manually in the numeric field.

When the window is opened, the calculator is pre-filled with sample default data, for which the daily and monthly cost is calculated immediately:

  • 1 data source,
  • 10 tags,
  • data updates every 5 minutes,
  • data retention time: 3 months,
  • 3 screens,
  • 3 reports,
  • 3 CAL licenses.

After changing the parameters, click the RECALCULATE button to update the calculated daily and monthly cost, as well as the values on the chart and the individual cards.

Using the calculator

The cost calculator lets you:

  • estimate the approximate cost of using DataPortal before launching or expanding a project,
  • check how changing a single parameter (e.g. the tag update frequency, their retention time, or the number of data sources) affects the daily and monthly cost,
  • compare the share of individual categories and cost items in the total cost, making it easier to identify the main cost components,
  • support InPoint budget planning and making informed decisions about expanding the project.

Other buttons

  • RESET TO ZERO — resets the values of all parameters to zero, letting you build a cost estimate from scratch.
  • RESTORE DEFAULTS — restores the default values, i.e. those set automatically when the calculator is first opened.
  • CLOSE — closes the cost calculator window.
